Victorian Vulcanite Shield Locket, Ornate Interior

A lovely example of a Victorian era large shield shaped locket pendant made from vulcanite.

Vulcanite was invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock by combining the heated sap of Euphorbia or Ficus trees from Malaysia with sulphur, its dark colour and unusual material fascinated the Victorians.

The shield is highly polished outside and once open it reveals some beautiful and intricate carvings around the two picture sections.

The locket is in very good condition for its age with only surface marks in line with its age. The hinge works well and its snaps shut nicely.

It measures approx. 1-1/2 tall not including the bale, 1-1/8" wide and approx. .45" deep.

An unusual and beautiful vulcanite locket!
